The variety of musical traditions in Africa is staggering; it is said that virtually every village has its own rhythm, its own sound. Many of these musical traditions offer delightful often provocative musical surprises for the many people in the world who have yet to be exposed to their charms. Then, too, exciting new musics are being fashioned by African musicians who fuse elements of indegenous tradition with sounds and rhythms developed abroad.
