Human Rights Watch provides a comprehensive examination of the rebel movement that is responsible for the civil war in northern Uganda for nearly two decades. 

Luganda, the native language of the people of Buganda, developed over the centuries as a spoken language. Its written form is only as recent as the arrival of the Arab and European influence among the Baganda. It is not easy, and of course it is not within the scope of this discussion, to trace its origins, but it is proper to assume that in a dynamic society with such well structured cultural, social, and political institutions like those of the Baganda, the language must have experienced a reciprocal influence during most of the changes the society went through over the course of its history. It was not however, until after the second half of the nineteenth century, that Luganda was first written down and appeared in print in its own right.

Nyumbani is home to about 100 HIV/AIDS children, ages newborn to 20. They represent all tribes and ethnicities of Kenya. Children are referred to Nyumbani through national hospitals and through Nyumbani's own outreach program, Lea Toto.

Sebunjo Joel is a dynamic endongo and endere player. He also plays the 12-slab Amadinda, which he learned from his grandfather and other master musicians. Born in 1984 in Kampala, Uganda, Sebunjo has studied and perfomed Ganda music since the age of six. Like Samite, Sebunjo can trace his ancestry to the Buganda kingdom, which dates back to the 17th century.

UNICEF priorities: Although annual per capita income has increased, disparities in the distribution of wealth have widened, and the number of children whose rights are violated, or at risk of being violated, is growing. It is estimated that almost 44 per cent of the country's 21 million people live in absolute poverty. HIV/AIDS, poses the greatest challenge to Uganda's citizens and places a burden on the country's resources through rising medical expenditures, absenteeism from work, the need to train replacement labour and labour shortages stemming from HIV/AIDS mortality and morbidity. The agricultural sector has already been seriously affected by the epidemic, and national capacity-building efforts are endangered.

UWESO objectives: 1) To help, protect, love and generally care for the orphans so that they may grow up as happy and normal children; 2) To foster and promote the standard of life of orphans in Uganda through education and material provision of the essentials of life.

Masulita Children's Village is one of the many programs administered by UWESO. Masulita was set up initially to resettle war orphans whose relatives could not be traced after the 1980-6 civil war. It has since taken on a few children as a result of AIDS. These children are provided with the basic necessities like food, clothing, shelter and education.
